Farming pharmaceuticals

Thursday, 23 June 2011 19:11 Written by Alex Morrell

Herbal remedies are hundreds of years old, most synthetic drugs mimic the bio-chemical properties of plants and very often herbs have more than one beneficial effect on the body. Yet we are heavily dependent on pharmaceutical companies for medical products.

Judging from the turnout at the herb workshop, one of the highest recorded at an HCFA workshop, there are quite a few people looking for an alternative option to the pharmaceutical monopoly. They weren’t disappointed. Debbie Syrett, a qualified and practicising medicinal herbalist, delivered a very informative workshop on herbs and their medicinal uses.

It started with a walk round the herb garden – stopping at each plant (thyme, mint, borage, sage, marigold, fennel) to discuss their health benefits. After which Debbie gave a demonstration of the methods used to prepare herbs, in particular, herbal teas and tinctures.

Besides a greater awareness of herbs and their uses there was one resounding message taken away from the workshop – not only are herbal remedies at least as effective at both preventing and curing ailments but they empower people to become pharmaceutically independent. The knowledge Debbie imparted was a real eye opener – thank you.
