Gardening under glass

The HCFA workshops came springing back to life last weekend with the help of Nick Morgan, from RHS Wisley, and some fine weather.

The workshop was very well attended – so we seem to have started where we left off last November – which was largely down to the quality of the guest speaker.

For Nick, the Glasshouse Specialist at Wisley, the HCFA polytunnel probably seemed like small change compared to the computerised irrigation systems and temperature controls in the RHS glass houses. However, Nick treated the HCFA under cover propagation facilities (a coldframe and polytunnel) with the same level of professionalism.

He demonstrated sowing techniques, discussed the conditions peculiar to glasshouse growing and mentioned the pests and diseases which are unique to these environments. More information is available from the workshop factsheet at www.hcfa.org.uk/docs/factsheets.

The next workshop subject is cucabits – courgettes, squashes, cucumbers and pumpkins – on the 21st of April. We hope you can make it.
