Selling surplus produce

Tuesday, 13 April 2010 19:15 Written by Alex Morrell

Fortunately for allotment holders the only law they need concern themselves with, for the majority of the time, is the natural law – which is resolutely consistent.

Unfortunately, Parliament isn’t quite as eloquent when it comes to law making.

Consequently, the 1925 Allotments Act is behind the times, a hindrance to those exploring ways to innovatively use allotment land and, like the Faggs Road Allotments, ready for a face-lift.

A recent announcement by the Department for Communities and Local Government[1] suggests that the Government is ready to give the Act a bit of a nip and a tuck. It is proposing to lift the restriction on selling surplus produce from allotments. This change in the law would be just in the nick of time for HCFA and presents another option for disposing of, what we hope will be, a bumper harvest.
