Cinnabar moth

Cinnabar moth David Nicholls

Tyria jacobaeae

Both the adult and its caterpillar are almost unmistakable. This is a common moth species which breeds mainly on Ragwort. The yellow and black banded caterpillars collect the toxins from the plants to make them poisonous to predators - hence the warning colours. It flies from May through to July.
